Wellington City Council
We would like to update you on the proposed changes to our City Housing Policy for rent setting.
As part of the consultation which went from 2 June – 5 July 2020 we wrote to all tenants, partner agencies and community organisations. We received over 500 submissions, including nearly 40 oral submissions to Council. The Council was due to make a decision on the proposal on 20 August 2020. Based on all the submissions we received, we need some extra time to consider all of the feedback and make changes before this is further considered by the Council.
Until a final decision is made by Council, we won’t be changing the way we set rents for tenants. The Government rent increase freeze is still in place and so any annual rent reviews are also on hold.
We know that the uncertainty associated with the possible changes can be stressful for our tenants. We have written to all of our tenants today updating them.
We promise to keep our tenants, partner agencies and community organisations updated as this progresses with the Council. We hope to be able to give you an update in mid-September. Please note that the current COVID situation may impact on this further, but again, we will let you know if anything changes.
Thank you to all of you who provided feedback. It is valued and appreciated and we are taking into account everything we have heard.
